Intent
Our intention is that when children leave Greenfield, they will do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society. We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it. In an ever–changing world, it is important that they are aware, to an appropriate level, of different factors which will affect their world and that they learn how to deal with these so that they have good mental health and well-being.
Our Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) curriculum develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills which will enable children to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be a global citizen now and in their future roles within a global community. It promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life. Our Relationships and Health Education enables our children to learn how to be safe, and to understand and develop healthy relationships, both now and in their future lives.
We recognise that, at times, some children may need further, more personalised support individually or as a small group. To support these children, we are able to offer a wide range of support including nurture groups, Thrive action plans (for home and school) alongside 1:1 or small group interventions as well as other interventions as needed. We also refer children for additional support through outside agencies as necessary.
Implementation
In an ideal world, children would arrive at school socially developed and ready to learn but this is not always the case. As such, high-quality life skills education is essential for all students to reach their full potential. At Greenfield we use 1decision which provides an interactive bank of resources which supports PSHE, RSE, Health education, SMSC development, and safeguarding. Mapped to the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study, and ensuring full coverage of the statutory elements for Relationship Education and Health Education, the 1decision resources help children to develop the skills needed to manage difference, influences and pressures, as a part of their personal development. The unique suite of resources allows students to experience challenging situations in a safe environment.
In our EYFS we use the 1Decision resources to support the teaching of PSED. We use Dilemma Drops, animated story books, cards to sort and talk about, mindfulness videos etc which are accessed throughout EYFS. The materials support ‘in the moment’ planning and are not planned as individual lessons but are resources that can be accessed as appropriate within the provision. Students are guided through our Early Years resources by our colourful Rainbow Drop characters. Throughout these resources, the Rainbow Drops will go on many adventures and learn a lot about the wider world that they live in.
In Years 1-3, each year we cover the same themes that are taught around different age appropriate scenarios in each year group. These themes are:
In Years 4-6, we follow the same pattern with similar, age appropriate themes:
All children access a practical first aid course each year through a trained provider. In the 2021 - 2022 academic year each class was trained by Lou Botham. We also identify links to British Values, and SMSC and is taught in such a way as to reflect the overall aims, values, and ethos of the school.
