Hedgehogs

Busy Bears had a visit from Allan and Anita. They look after injured Hedgehogs at their 'Hogspikle' (a hedgehog hospital) and gave us lots of information about Hedgehogs and showed us a baby Hedgehog!

Did you know...

  • Fully grown Hedgehogs have between 5000 and 7000 spikes.
  • A Hedgehog can run at the speed of 10mph.
  • Hedgehogs are nocturnal animals and cannot see very well in daylight hours.
  • Hedgehogs can swim (though they can tire quickly).
  • Hedgehogs have been around for 25 million years.
  • They hibernate during the winter months.
  • A new born Hedgehog is the size of a jelly baby sweet and is pink in colour. They grow very fast!

What does the 'Hogspikle' do?

  • They feed and clean the Hedgehogs everyday.
  • They are fed cat food for added nutrients and vitamins and this can give them an extra 2 years life span!
  • They look after and rescue Hedgehogs that have been injured (they told us some very interesting stories about their rescues)!

Children then made their own Hedgehogs in the Forest using clay and small sticks.
